Liquid Activity Monitoring

Liquid activity monitors are used to monitor process liquids and effluents. They provide an early warning of possible plant malfunction or increased radiation, and prevent the inadvertent release of radioactivity.

Liquid activity monitors are part of process radiation monitoring systems. These systems provide surveillance of selected fluid streams containing radioactivity, and the resulting data is used to control how such streams are handled within the plant. They therefore also have important implications for radioactive waste management.

A liquid process monitor can be an attached-to-line, in-line, or off-line unit, with or without a shielded measurement chamber.

Liquid effluent monitors detect and measure radioactive materials released in liquid effluent streams. They generate an alarm signal or trigger other systems to terminate or modify the flow or nature of the effluent stream upon detecting high radioactivity.

Depending on the specific application, total activity can be measured, or the activity of specific radionuclides can be measured, with low or high resolution, depending on the detector used.
