Indirect methods of surface contamination monitoring

Indirect methods of surface contamination monitoring are used when unsuitable geometry or interference from other radiations prevent direct monitoring and as complementary measures when direct monitoring has shown the presence of radioactive contamination.

A wide range of techniques is available, but all depend upon the removal of radioactive material from the surface being examined. It may be necessary to take samples from the area being monitored to another area for counting.

Direct contamination monitoring with a mobile contamination monitor and indirect contamination monitoring by means of a smear test sample, especially to find out if contamination is sticking, are both essential routine radiation protection practices. The SaphyRAD & the PAB2 can both be used for non-fixed surface contamination points statutory search of materials, parcels, etc. leaving a controlled area or a nuclear site.
