Implementation of a radiological monitoring system for a soccer tournament

Context

During large-scale international sporting events, the safety of participants, spectators, and staff members is a priority. Among the various potential threats, the nuclear risk remains a major concern, even if it is less visible. It is therefore crucial to prepare for the possibility of a nuclear threat by adopting stringent protective measures.

In the summer of 2024, a European Men’s Football Championship took place in Germany. In this context, the environmental authority of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, the “Landesanstalt für Umwelt Baden-Württemberg” (LUBW), monitored the ambient dose rate within the Stuttgart stadium, which has a capacity of 54,812 spectators. This stadium hosted five matches during the competition.

Particular emphasis was placed on the secure and redundant data transmission to the central server to ensure optimal information management. The primary objective of the implemented system was to guarantee the safety of spectators and the population against any threat, particularly in the event of a terrorist attack.
