On November 12th, 2019, the European Commission reached the Best Available Techniques (BAT) conclusions, under Directive 2010/75/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council, for waste incineration. Its main objectives are improving the overall environmental performance, by planning and implementing the necessary procedures, as well as the preventing & corrective actions to avoid environmental risks from waste incineration. Among the many conclusions drawn by the European directive, there is the control of waste deliveries as part of waste acceptance procedures, depending on the risk posed by the accidental presence of contaminated materials and/or orphan radioactive sources.

From now on, European incineration plants have to be equipped with a radiation monitoring system for the detection of very low radioactive contamination and orphan sources in:

  • municipal solid and other non-hazardous waste;
  • hazardous waste other than clinical waste;
  • & clinical waste, that would be delivered, stored and processed in such facilities.

For many years now, Bertin Technologies has supported the waste disposal industry by helping it to conform with the applicable standards, but also to protect the environment and preserve the health and safety of the population.
To do so, Bertin has developed high-performance radiation portal monitors, such as the SaphyGATE G, for the detection of any radioactive sources in waste loaded onto trains and trucks, delivered to incineration plants. Its adaptive alarm threshold and alarm classification functions ensure the discrimination of natural and artificial radiations, making it a very useful device by providing an immediate support to the user.

With its new advanced technology, the SaphyGATE G is compliant with most available standards, such as the NF EN 62022, the UNI-10987:2016 standard, the voestalpine approval, the IEC 62244 norm as well as the IAEA and ANSI 42.33 standard.
The SaphyGATE G is also approved by the Bundesamt für Gesundheit (Federal Office of Public Health) in Switzerland to be used in incineration plants, such as KVA.
