Evaluate fluoxetine effect on mitochondrial activity during physical endurance exercice

Tutakhail, A., Nazari, Q. A., Khabil, S., Gardier, A., & Coudore, F. (2019). Muscular and mitochondrial effects of long-term fluoxetine treatment in mice, combined with physical endurance exercise on treadmill. Life sciences, 232, 116508. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.lfs.2019.05.064

Context

Top-level athletes are regularly confronted with stressful situations that can lead depression or anxiety and can impair their sporting performance. More and more athletes are taking antidepressants such as fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, to combat these mental health disorders.

On the other hand, skeletal muscle can be split in 2 categories depending on their fibers’ composition : 2a or 2b fiber. The practice of endurance sports leads to a change in muscle composition by increasing the number of 2a fibers. The latter had a greater mitochondria quantity than 2b fibers. Thus, this article investigated on the impact of physical endurance exercise on mitochondrial activity in relation to fluoxetine intake.

This article highlights the use of Precellys 24 homogenizer to extract mitochondrial-derived enzymes from mouse muscles under different conditions of exercise (physical endurance exercise) and fluoxetine intake.
