Modern astronomy aims to understand the Universe as a whole, through the study of vast populations of stars and galaxies. This requires large volumes of consistent data to analyse in detail their distribution, evolution and composition. The challenge is to collect ever more observations efficiently in order to address today’s major questions, such as the formation of cosmic structures or the nature of dark energy.
