Radiation Monitoring Systems (RMS) are often described as the central nervous system of a nuclear power plant, the invisible network that keeps operators informed and safe at every moment. In this Expert Talk video, Martin Vecerak, Head of R&D at Bertin Nuclear, presents our RMS product range and explains how Bertin Nuclear is shaping its future.
Martin brings more than 14 years of hands-on experience in the field, having worked as Production and R&D Manager at VF Nuclear before taking on his current role at the start of this year. In the video, he walks through the essentials of our RMS range: thousands of measurement channels, sensors, displays and electronics built around Geiger-Müller tubes, scintillator materials and ionization chambers, all working together to detect radiation and flag early signs of leaks or technical issues so operators can act fast.
A key differentiator, according to Martin, lies in Bertin Nuclear’s integrated, European-based approach. The division manufactures its own detectors, designs its own systems and supervision software, and supports customers throughout the entire lifecycle of their RMS, from architecture design and installation to qualification and long-term maintenance. This end-to-end capability is rooted in the combined heritage of two historic companies, Bertin Instruments and Bertin VF Nuclear, whose decades of experience in radiation monitoring systems now form the backbone of the division.
Looking ahead, Martin points to two major trends that will shape the next generation of our RMS range: the digitalization of nuclear facilities, bringing IoT-enabled predictive maintenance and better operational overview, with cybersecurity as a non-negotiable priority; and the emergence of Small Modular Reactors (SMR), which will require radiation monitoring systems specifically adapted to their unique architecture and needs.
