Pathogens represent a constant threat to aquaculture operations and can significantly impact fish health, production performance, and farm profitability. In Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), where water is continuously reused to optimize resources and farming conditions, early virus detection is essential to protect stock health, limit the risk of pathogen spread, and strengthen facility biosecurity.
While health monitoring traditionally relies on water and fish analysis, the role of aerosols in pathogen circulation remains largely unexplored in aquaculture. Yet, certain types of equipment used in RAS can generate airborne particles capable of carrying microorganisms throughout the farming environment. As a result, bioaerosol analysis represents a promising complementary approach, providing valuable insights into the presence and circulation of pathogens within aquaculture facilities.
